20 September 2013, 07:30Augustine Osayande

Abuja - More than 140 corpses have been evacuated from the Maiduguri/Damaturu highway and surrounding bushes after a killing spree by suspected Boko Haram members.

Officials from the Borno State Environmental Protection Agency (BOSEPA) said 55 corpses were evacuated on Wednesday while another set of 87 corpses were evacuated on Thursday from the road and nearby bushes.

There were gory scenes as journalists saw three swollen corpses lying on the highway as the hunt for the bodies were ongoing at the time of going to press.

On Tuesday, suspected Boko Haram members, clad in police uniform, went on a rampage that left fourteen civilians and five armed personnel, including two soldiers and 3 policemen, dead in Benisheikh town.

Briefing the Borno State Governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, the Caretaker Chairman of Kaga Local Government Council, Alhaji Bunu Kaigama, said, "14 persons lost their lives within the town on Wednesday from the attack by Boko Haram members. Many others were killed along the road to Maiduguri and Damaturu."

Property with millions was destroyed during the attack by the insurgents.
