Govt, construction firms partner on tree planting

30 July 2013, 16:07

Abuja - Rivers State Commissioner for Environment, Dr Nyema Weli, urged construction companies to complement government efforts to conserve the environment by planting trees where they operate.

Weli invited the firms to join the Ministry’s of Environment's Mother Earth Tree Planting project, which will be launched in August.

During a meeting with the construction firms in Abuja, the Commissioner briefed them on the modalities of the project, which include the planting of economic trees along major roads in the Port Harcourt metropolis and ornamental trees by households.

He urged the companies to collaborate with government in achieving this project which he said was aimed at mitigating flood effects, restoring the aesthetics of the State as well as releasing fresh air to the environment.

The construction companies pledged to collaborate with the government in that regard.

Andrew Suslaich, Chief Executive Officer of RCC, a major construction firm, said the company was already engaged in such projects.

He however advised the Ministry to embark on an awareness exercise as members of the public were destroying trees wantonly.
