Abuja – Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders) and TerraGraphics International Foundation have met with the Permanent Secretary, Linus Awute about lead poisoning in Zamfara State, AllAfrica reports.
The two groups have met with the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development to discuss ways in which to prevent lead poisoning in the future in Zamfara State and the rest of the country.
Michelle Chouinard, the Country Head of Medecins Sans Frontieres, and Simba Tirima, the Director of Field Operations of TerraGraphics International Foundation, commented that the government’s intervention and support in Zamfara State in 2010 achieved well in the areas of safer mining practice, environmental remediation and treatment of victims who have been affected.
The visit of the groups was to notify the ministry that they have completed the remediation exercise in Bagega, Zamfara State.
