Gully erosion cuts off community in Enugu

31 January 2013, 07:41

Oji River - No fewer than 100 households in Agbadala-Achi community in Oji River LGA of Enugu State have been cut off by gully erosion in the area.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the erosion cut off the area after a road under construction was abandoned by the contractor.

Aggrieved members of the community told journalists on Wednesday that the rains of the last year did the havoc as the construction work affected the course of the floods.

They said economic activities in the area, especially in Amauzu and Umuelengwu, had gone down as a result of the erosion.

They blamed the abandoned project for their misfortune and called on the state government to help them with the completion of the road.

Mr Augustine Eze, the President-General of Agbadala Autonomous Community, described the erosion as a punishment to the community, saying that the abandoned road contributed to the menace.

According to Eze, the two-kilometer road from Eke Egbo market to Central School was motorable until it was awarded to a company for construction.

"What the entire community is suffering today is as a result of the contractor abandoning the project.

"The rainy season is setting in again and we don’t want to experience what we experienced last year.

"The entire community has been cut off from business activities since the erosion started and the community cannot control it alone," he said.

Mr Chukwudi Madueme, the Secretary of the community, blamed the construction company for the poor handling of the project, saying the community had been bearing the brunt since the last rainy season.

In his own comments, Mr Eric Ozoadibe, the Councillor representing Achi Uno Ward III, appealed to the state government to help the community in completing the road.

The councillor alleged that the road had become a meeting point for hoodlums and that the communities were in danger if it was not repaired.

The road links the community to Enugu-Agu Achi, Inyi and Ufuma in Anambra.
