Yenagoa - Gunmen on Sunday kidnapped the aged parents of Ogbia Local Government Chairman, Richard Ibegu, at Oloibiri, Bayelsa.
Mr. Fetus and Mrs. Ebiye Ibegu were abducted around 9:20 p.m. by three gunmen, who stormed their residence and forcefully took them away.
Eye witnesses said the gunmen, who shot sporadically to scare away residents, invaded the area with a speed boat and took away their victims through the Oloibiri creeks to unknown destination.
The incident came barely a week after the mother of the Speaker, Bayelsa House of Assembly, Madam Betinah Benson, was released by gunmen who abducted her.
The renewed incidence of kidnapping in the state, which became a source of worry to the government, had been blamed on disgruntled politicians.
The kidnap of the duo, which some community sources attributed to politics, is currently raising tension in Oloibiri community.
A community source, who pleaded anonymity, said the gunmen might have kidnapped the victims to extort money from their son.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Fidelis Odunna, confirmed the incident, saying the police were investigating it.
"The command has despatched a crack team to the creek to track down the kidnappers," he said.
