Gunmen kill 12 cows in Plateau

21 November 2012, 13:07

Plateau -  The Military Task Force (STF) keeping the peace in Plateau on Tuesday said that 12 cows were killed during an attack on migrating cows at Heipang in Barkin Ladi Local Government area of the state.

The STF Spokesman, Capt. Salisu Mustapha, who made the disclosure in a press statement in Jos on Tuesday, said the cows were migrating from Bisichi village to Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna state when they were attacked.

``The gun men shot 12 cows dead and injured 12 others, `` he said.

``when the report of the attack reached STF personnel at Hiepang, they rushed to the scene but the attackers had escaped.''

Mustapha said investigation into the incident had commenced to bring the perpetrators to book.

He said that following the ugly incident, the STF Commander, Maj. Gen. Henry Ayoola, held a meeting with stakeholders to sympathise with the owners, assess the loss and to avert a recurrence.

The meeting, he said, was attended by Chairman of Barkin Ladi LGA, Mr Emmanuel Loman and the Secretary of Jos South LGA, Gideon Danderang, and many people made donated to the victims.

``In that meeting an agreement was reached that owners of the cows should be supported financially to cushion the loss and assessment of the loss be made to make the perpetrators compensate when apprehended.

``At the end of the meeting, a total of N250,000 was realised with Loman and Ayoola donating N100,000 each.''

Meanwhile, the STF on Tuesday also recovered a stolen Green Range Rover car, with registration number, GQ 824 ABC (Abuja) at Angwan Rogo area of Jos North Local Government Area.

Mustapha said that one of the robbers was arrested and was already undergoing interrogation.

``The suspect and the car are in our custody and investigation has commenced.''

The STF spokesman also said that his men interrupted the activities of vandals around Miyango Junction, Rukuba road in Basssa Local Government and recovered fibre cables.

He said when the vandals saw STF personnel on patrol approaching, they abandoned the stolen cables belonging to a communication company along side their car and took to their heels.

According to him, the car and the cables recovered are under the custody of the task force.

Mustapha called on the general public not to relent in providing useful information to the task force as ``such information will be treated with utmost confidentiality``.
