Ife varsity declares curfew over monarch's demise

Ife - Authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo Univeristy, has directed its students to stay indoors throughout the duration of the final rites of the late traditional ruler of the town, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Premium Times reports.

In a statement, the Dean of Students’ Affairs of the institution, Lateefat Durosimi, on Tuesday directed students to remain calm and stay indoors throughout the duration of the burial rites.

The Ife Council of Chiefs had yesterday warned all residents in Ile Ife to remain indoors tomorrow between 9am and 5pm.

In the same vein, the institution has also put off all continuous assessment exercises such as test and classes earlier slated for Wednesday.

The council of chiefs had been in denial since the news of the Ooni’s death broke, claiming that its traditional rulers don’t die.

Many of the chiefs were also embarrassed by the fact that the media reported the passing, instead of the traditional channels established by age-long customs of Ife land.
