Lagos – Enugu state officials rescued a three-day-old baby and arrested a man during a raid of an illegal maternity home.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) confirmed the arrest of Dr Ben Agbo, the owner of Moonlight Maternity Home in the Coal Camp area, and the arrest of a nurse who was working at the clinic.
Nathaniel Ubong, the State NSCDC Commander, said the suspects were apprehended following a tip-off from citizens.
“The arrest followed tedious surveillance of the maternity home,” he said.
Ubong said the agency became suspicious as the maternity home was not on the list of hospitals the Ministry of Gender Affairs submitted to NSCDC as accredited for child fostering.
The baby was rescued while it was to be delivered to a buyer.
Among items recovered from the suspects include vital documents relating to past sales of babies by the clinic under the guise of child fostering.
