'Introduce tourism course in schools curriculum'

30 November 2012, 07:14

Lagos - Mr Edward Adebisi, managing director of African Event Company, Lagos, on Thursday urged the Federal Government to introduce tourism course in Nigerian educational curriculum to widen the scope of the industry.

Adebisi, who made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, bemoaned the level of tourism in the country.

He said that introducing tourism course in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions would assist the development of the sector.

"The more institutions graduate tourism students, the more they tap from the sector’s potential.

"The industry will improve if there are lots of tourism experts in the society that will explore the potential of the industry," he said.

Adebisi said that introducing tourism course in the schools curriculum would give individual interested in studying tourism opportunity to choose from the curriculum.

"It is always a challenge in the industry to witness more tourism graduates in the society, which has been hindering the growth of the industry," he said.

Adebisi said that such introduction would boost government revenue generation from the sector.

"Tourism can be explored to replace oil if the government gives the sector the needed attention," he said.
