Jigawa - To avert flooding, the Jigawa Government has evacuated drains in flood-prone areas, the state Commissioner for Land and Housing, Habib Barde, said on Friday.
Barde said that the measure was taken following the prediction by the Nigeria Metrological Agency (NIMET) Jigawa was among the high risk states that would be affected by flooding this year.
According to him, the government has directed all the local government chairmen to evacuate the drains in the urban centres and towns across the state.
The commissioner said that the state government had also engaged the services of ecological experts who recommended various flood control measures.
“The state government is very proactive to prevent flooding forecast by NIMET and relevant agencies are up and doing to check the menace of flooding in the state.
“As I am talking to you now, the report is being processed and we shall implement it accordingly.”
Barde said that the ministry had also commenced an enlightenment campaign against tampering with water canals and indiscriminate disposal of refuse along waterways.
He identified the main cause flooding in the state as the blockage of drains, tributaries and building on waterways.
