Jigawa spends N2bn on school projects

31 December 2012, 13:26

Jigawa - The Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) spent N2 billion on school development projects during the year, the Chairman, Alhaji Sani Abdullahi, said in Dutse on Monday.

Abdullahi made the fact known while reviewing the board's activities during the year, adding that the funds were spent on the construction and rehabilitation of classrooms and procurement of school furniture.

The chairman said the board awarded contracts worth N1.3 billion for the rehabilitation and construction of 783 classrooms in 240 primary and junior secondary schools. He also said the board spent more than N700 million on the provision of 43,750 school furniture.

He said that the projects were executed under the 2011/2012 Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and SUBEB intervention programme. Similarly, the Jigawa Nomadic Education Board spent N71 million on school rehabilitation projects during the year. The chairman of the board, Alhaji Ali Manu, said while reviewing the board's activities during the year that the board established seven new nomadic education centres and rehabilitated 10 others.

He said the board had also distributed instructional materials to nomadic education centres in the 27 local government areas of the state. The chairman further said that the board spent more than N5 million on the procurement and distribution of free uniforms, shoes and school bags to 30,000 pupils. He said the board recruited 50 teachers and trained 280 others on modern teaching techniques. “The board in collaboration with UNICEF distributed 50 motorcycles to teachers,” Manu said.
