Jigawa to immunise 1.4mn children

15 November 2012, 15:06

Dutse - Jigawa Government on Thursday said it has targeted 1.4 million children for immunisation against Wild Polio Virus (WPV) in the 6th round immunisation exercise.

The five-day immunisation exercise would take place between Nov. 16 and Nov. 20.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Tafida, said this while fielding questions from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse.

Tafida said the state government had stepped up activities to put a final onslaught on the disease.

He said the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) had supplied enough doses of the vaccines and deployed technical teams to facilitate smooth conduct of the exercise.

"We embarked on campaign activities to educate communities on the dangers of the disease and the need for parents to present their wards for immunisation.

"We are also meeting with community and religious leaders, local council officials and other stakeholders to mobilise participation in the exercise," he said.

The commissioner said vaccinators, supervisors and other health personnel were trained on how to resolve rejection and data keeping.

He said proper data record would ensure effective coverage of the targeted children.

He said the state government had enacted a law compelling parents to submit their children for immunisation, warning that parents who rejected the oral polio vaccine would be prosecuted.
