Jonathan orders food to terror-stricken states

03 July 2013, 16:43

Abuja - President Goodluck Jonathan has directed the release of 25 000 tonnes of food to avert hunger in the three regions under a state of emergency.

The food will be released from the strategic grain reserves for Adamawa, Borno, the largest and worse hit by the insurgency, and Yobe States.

Minister of State for Finance, Yerima Ngama, said the President' directive followed Ngama's and Minister of State for Agriculture, Tijani Bukar's appeal.

"The insecurity has caused untold hardship on the people. The restriction of movement has reduced farming activities in the states hence the intervention of the federal government," Ngama said.

Borno will receive 324 trailer loads of food while Yobe will get 195 trailers. Adamawa will 170 trailer loads.

The regions are under a state of emergency government declared following acts of terror blamed on the outlawed Boko Haram sect.
