Jonathan urges Commission to enhance US ties

17 July 2013, 07:27Augustine Osayande

Abuja - President Goodluck Jonathan called for the strengthening of the Nigeria-United States Bi-National Commission to boost relations between the two countries.

Jonathan described the Commission, which was established during US President Barack Obama’s first term in office, which started in 2009, as a commendable initiative which both countries must nurture.

"It will greatly help to further improve cooperation between the two countries in various areas including economic relations, trade, security and defence," he said after a meeting with Terence McCulley, the outgoing Ambassador of the US to Nigeria,.

Jonathan praised McCulley for his efforts to strengthen the ever-improving relations between Nigeria and the US.

McCulley thanked the Nigerian for the support and cooperation he received from the government during his tenure.

He told the President that the US regarded Nigeria as a key strategic partner in Sub-Saharan Africa and would continue working with Nigeria to strengthen and expand bilateral cooperation.

The Nigeria-US Bi-Commission, which the US Secretary of State and Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs co-chair, meets twice a year.
