KDSG awards N259m contracts for building classrooms, others

14 December 2012, 10:40

Kaduna - The Kaduna State Government has awarded N259 million worth of contracts for a Mathematics Improvement Project and also build 42 blocks of classrooms across the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Information and Home Affairs, Alhaji Saidu Adamu, disclosed this on Thursday after the State Executive Council's meeting in Kaduna.

He said building 42 new blocks of classrooms was aimed at improving the education sector in the state.

Adamu said the contracts for the construction of the classrooms were awarded to two different contractors for N109.1 and N120.7 million respectively.

According to him, the first contractor has a 30-week completion period while the second has a 78-week completion period.

The commissioner added that the council also approved the award of contract for the Mathematics Improvement Project at Rimi College, Kaduna.

He said the contract would cost N30 million with a completion period of 32 weeks.

The project, according to him, was meant to improve the teaching and learning of Mathematics and English Language in the school.

He said further that the Mathematics Improvement Project would also equip students with skills as well as lay the foundation for any course they might take in future.

Also speaking, the state’s Head of Service (HOS), Mr Nathaniel Hayab, disclosed that  the council had reviewed the restructuring of the salary and allowances of civil servants.

He said salaries and allowances enjoyed by workers in the state were usually backed up by the “Establishment Circular”.

"In the past, the operations of some of these have been jettisoned and you will find out that due process has not been followed," Hayab said.

He said the government had brought out all the salaries and allowances in the state that are operational and backed by establishment circulars.

The Head of Service said they had consequently been written and circulated to all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) for workers to know what is approved and operational.

He said all allowances would henceforth come on board when they have been approved and had followed the due process through the establishment circular.

The HOS cited the example of medical practitioners and health workers who for instance take certain allowances meant for those in rural areas in spite of the fact that they reside within the metropolis.

"The biometric machine at the BATMIS has been programmed, that your location of duties has the allowance that goes with it," he said.
