Kaduna immunises 3.4m children against polio

06 December 2012, 13:17 -

Kaduna -  A total of 3.4 million children have been immunised against polio during the last rounds of polio immunisation in Kaduna State, the Chairman, Action Committee on Immunisation, Mustapha Jumare, has said.

Jumare told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Kaduna that the committee was concerned about the resurgence of the disease in the state and was doing its best to tackle it.

He said that 15 new cases of wild polio virus were detected between January and December this year.

The chairman explained that type one and three of the deadly virus were found in children in various communities in Kubau, Zaria, Ikara, Igabi, Birnin Gwari, Makarfi and Chikun Local Government Areas.

``As at June 2009 till December 2011 the state had been a polio-free zone, but unfortunately, between January and December 2012, 15 cases had been recorded and it is disheartening."

Jumare attributed the resurgence of the disease to the activities of migrant communities, pocket of resistance by parents and proximity to polio endemic states.

He urged parents and all stakeholders in the fight against polio to strengthen their activities and help the state to be polio-free.
