Abuja - The rehabilitation and expansion of a water treatment and supply scheme in Kaduna is poised to deliver about 150 million litres of water to Zaria and neighboring semi-urban areas when complete.
The Federal and Kaduna State Governments are partnering on the project.
“This project is intended to alleviate and address the issue of perennial shortage of water for domestic, commercial and industrial purposes,” the general manager of Kaduna Water Works, engineer Kabiru Ahmed, disclosed in Zaria during an inspection of the project by members of the National Good Governance Tour.
In a brief made available to the team at the project site, the scope of the work includes construction of 157.50 ml/d capacity raw water intake station, raw water mains from intake station to water treatment plant, construction of 150 ml/d capacity water treatment plant, construction of clear water contact tank of 37,500m3 and construction of 200m3 capacity sludge tank and sludge pumping station.
Other components of the project include construction of a 500m³ elevated water tank and site water supply lines, construction of a high lift pumping station capable of lifting 150ml/d of treated water, a lagoon (sludge holding tank), a process and electrical duct, a 33kva electrical substation, Samaru Booster upgrading, a generator house, workshop and an administrative building.
Kabir disclosed significant progress had been made.
“The clear water tank is 97 percent completed. The chlorine house is 82 percent complete. The high lift pumping station is 87 percent complete. Plinth and piping works are in progress and at 87 percent. Horizontal flow clarifiers 94 percent, laboratory building 85 percent and rapid gravity filter 55 percent,” he said.
He added that pre-settlement tank was not part of the initial design of the plant.
“Although the pre-settlement tank was not part of the initial design of the plant, it was later incorporated to be used only during rainy season when turbidity of the water from the intake dam is very high. It consists of two tanks separated by a central wall on top of which lies the bypass channel. It has a base slab sloped towards a trapezoidal shaped sump into which all the settled particles would be collected,” said Ahmed.
