Kano - Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has approved Wednesday as a Public Holiday in commemoration of the New Islamic Year.
Also known as Muharram, the year, 1437 AH, will be commemorated on that day globally.
Director General, Media and Communications, Baba Halilu Dantiye, confirmed the local holiday.
He said the governor congratulated the people of Kano and all the Muslim Umma for witnessing the New Year.
Dantiye added that the governor also used the period to condole with the families of those who lost their lives in the two incidences in Saudi Arabia which led to the deaths of so many people and prayed for the quick recovery of those that sustained injuries.
He said the governor appealed to the people to use the public holiday in offering prayers, to The Almighty Allah (SWT), for peace and prosperity in our dear state and country as a whole.
“The governor reassures the people that the state government will continue to work hard towards improving the living standard of the people especially by according the education, both Islamic and Western, they priority they deserve,” said Dantiye.
