Kano lauds eradication of polio

28 September 2015, 13:06Augustine Osayande

Abuja - The Kano State Government has welcomed the official removal of Nigeria from the list of Polio-endemic countries.

State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, said the declaration, coming recently from the World Health Organisation was worth celebrating.

"This is a victory for the Federal Government and a victory for all of us.  This shows that our efforts in this direction are not going in vain," Ganduje said.

"The fact that we have witnessed a whole year without recording a single case of Polio in Nigeria signifies our determination to ensure that we are certified as Polio-free,” Ganduje said.

He stressed that all levels of government and other stakeholders must continue to work tirelessly to achieve the set goal.

“Even as we celebrate now, we must not rest. Polio eradication is a tasks that must be achieved so we must be resolute in the fight, especially by devoting more attention to routine immunization and surveillance, to succeed,” he asserted.

Last Friday, WHO declared polio is no longer endemic in Nigeria.

There are now only two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan, in which active cases of the disease are found.
