Lagos - The Kano State Government announced it had sealed a partnership with the Czech Republic on the provision of a light rail system for Kano city metropolitan using the power generated from the Independent Power Project at Challawa-Gorge and Tiga Dams.
Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State and the Czech Republic Ambassador to Nigeria, Pavel Mikes, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to that effect.
The objectives of the MoU, which has been signed at Kano Hovernor’s Lodge, Aminu Kano House, Asokoro, Abuja, include designing, manufacturing and assembling low-flow trams, electric locomotives, subway train units and or trolley buses as the need arises as well as construction of standard gauge tracks within Kano metropolitan city.

Governor’s spokesperson, Halilu Dantiye, said a comprehensive light rail master plan for Kano would also be developed to provide the basis for detailed terms of contract.
Dantiye said while the Kano State Government would finance the project in different phases as identified and agreed upon, the Czech Republic Embassy and its agencies would provide the services and materials also as identified and agreed upon.
