Kano residents clear drains ahead of rainy season

24 May 2013, 10:08

Kano - Residents of Kano have begun clearing drains around their homes and offices ahead of the 2013 rainy season.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) observed that around the city, groups and individuals have  set aside some hours daily to the general cleaning of drainage and other waterways.

But NAN noticed that people leave the dirt scoped from the drains on the roadsides.

Meanwhile, Malam Sulaiman Adamu, an elder, has been educating the people on the dangers in flooding.

He pleaded with the State Waste Management Authority to embark on street campaigns to sensitise the people to environmental cleanliness as well as collect refuse on the roads.

“The cleaning exercise carried out by the residents and groups will be meaningless if the dirt is  left to return to the gutters or liter the environment,” Sulaiman said.

He commended the state task force committee on drainage for its enlightenment campaign which had made people to realise the benefits of clearing drains.
