Katsina assesses fire problems

21 January 2014, 13:50Augustine Osayande

Abuja - Nine people lost their lives and property worth N14.2 million was destroyed during several fire incidents that occurred in Katsina State last year, according to State Commissioner for Information.

Hussaini Garba said a total of 265 distress calls were received while property worth N172.2 million was saved during the period.

The commissioner added that 61 lives were saved from the fire incidents within the year.

He attributed causes of the fire outbreak to electricity surge, gas cookers and bush burning.

“Indiscriminate bush burning, which mostly occurs in the rural areas, was responsible for fire outbreaks in the communities and villages of the state,” he added.

He said the state government had recently approved the purchase of firefighting equipment, chemicals and uniforms worth N16.6 million to boost firefighting operation in the state.

“The state has 10 fires service stations and has approved repair of nine firefighting engines for the sum of N1.6 million.”

Nigeria loses an estimated N50 billion worth of property annually to fire disasters.
