Katsina to jail, fine homosexuals

04 December 2013, 15:09

Katsina - People who engage in homosexuality in Katsina State will now face jail terms of up to 14 years or fines of N10 000.

The Katsina State House of Assembly has enacted such laws to pave way for the prosecution of culprits.

The assembly passed the law through an amendment to section 284 and 285 of the state penal code law CAP 96. The law provides for penalties to those found guilty of sexual harassment.

The amendment was sequel to a motion moved by Rabiu Idris Funtua, the All People’s Congress legislator, who in moving the motion, opined that the high rate of sexual harassment in the state called for stringent measures to punish perpetrators.

A copy of the law which was made available to journalists added  that the law now provides for 14 years imprisonment to anyone who engaged in bestiality.

“Any woman who engages in lesbianism with another woman or girl with or without her consent shall be liable to 14 years imprisonment and fine of N10 000. The same applies for any man who engage sexual intercourse with another man,” read part of the law.

Speaking to the journalists shortly after the bill, Funtua said he supported the bill as it would address cases of sexual harassment.
