Kebbi records 87 fire cases this year

11 October 2012, 07:37

Birnin Kebbi - The Kebbi Fire Service Department has recorded 87 fire outbreak between January and October this year, its Director, Alhaji Bello Ahmed, has said.

Ahmed told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday that the number was lower than the cases recorded last year.

The director attributed the reduction in fire incidents to the vigorous enlightenment campaign conducted by the department across the state.

"The department recorded 147 fire incidents last year, but we would not relent in enlightening the public on measures to prevent destruction of property and loss of lives."

Ahmed called on the people to avoid using sub-standard electric cables, saying that most of the incidents recorded were a result of  inferior foreign electric cables.

"We advise people to use Nigerian made electric cables that had been discovered to be durable and safe."

He identified shortage of personnel and vehicles as some of the major handicap of the department and appealed to the state government to intervene.
