Labour vows to prevent Jang’s budget presentation

13 December 2012, 16:20

Plateau - The striking Plateau workers on Thursday laid siege on the House of Assembly, where Gov. Jonah Jang, was expected to present the 2013 budget to stop the presentation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the striking workers who carried placards and green leaves took over all routes leading to the assembly as early as 7 a.m.

It would be recalled that the workers on Tuesday joined their local government counterparts who had being on strike in the past eight-months over the non-implementation of N18,000 minimum wage.

NAN reports that the striking workers, clad in black attires, drummed danced and sang solidarity songs.

The action of the workers prevented the governor from presenting the budget from the 10 am scheduled time.

Jibrin Bancir, the state NLC Chairman, told NAN that they would not allow the governor to present the budget until their demands were met.

``We will remain here and make sure that the governor does not present the budget to the house.

``How can he present another budget when he did not pay us our seven month entitlements contained in 2012 budget,’’ he asked.

Bancir said that they would continue with the struggle until government implements the wage for local government workers and pay the eight month arrears.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the house, Mr John Clark, and the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Stephen Barko, disguised themselves with the aim to beat the preying eyes of the irate workers.

While Clark succeeded in gaining entrance to the house by using an unmarked car, Barko was not that lucky.
