Lagos - The Lagos State Government has handed over a Micro Water Scheme to Ijede Community in Ikorodu area of the state as part of measures to eradicate the outbreak of water borne diseases in rural areas.
The micro water scheme was rehabilitated after it had been abandoned 23 years.
Handing over the scheme, Commissioner for Rural Development, Cornelius Ojelabi, said the government decided to rehabilitate the water plant in order to provide portable water to its citizenry.
According to him, the government is passionate about the source of water being taken by the people so as to stem water-borne diseases.
He charged the Community Development Associations (CDAs) to reciprocate the gesture of the Government in providing the facility by taking ownership and protecting it to make the facility last long.
Ojelabi charged them to understudy him for the period of two years that he would be managing and maintaining the project so that by the time the contractor is leaving, they would be able to work out a sustainability programme for it.
He further urged the CDAs to be security conscious and urged them to report any strange occurrence in their area to their Neigbhourhood Watch officers who would in turn get in touch with the appropriate security agency.
Chairman of Ijede Local Council Development Area, Hassan Adefarasin, commended the government for the project, noting that with the rehabilitation, his people could now have access to potable water after buying water for a long time from unknown sources.
He implored the government to assist the council with the construction of roads which Local Government could not embark on due to scarcity of fund.
Head of Rural Water and Sanitation in the Ministry of Rural Development, Engr Adisa Yinusa, said the water project was designed to deliver 45 000 litres of water per run and could supply 105 000 per day for three runs.
He said for the Micro Water Scheme to remain functional, the Ministry had provided it within 45KVA generating set, installed 100KV transformer connected to IKDC line with the submersible pumps, dosing pumps, tanks and accessories.
