Lagos probes HIV rape victim case

04 June 2014, 21:31

Lagos - The Lagos State House of Assembly has established a committee to investigate reports young men allegedly raped and infected a female counterpart with the human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV).

The 19-year old reported five boys had violated her in the Bariga area of the state while she was on her way to work.

The young woman who was identified as Helen to protect her identity, reportedly failed to report the incident for fear of stigma.

She was reportedly diagnosed with HIV three months later.

The lawmaker representing the Alimosho Constituency 2, Omotayo Oduntan, brought the plight of the woman, who comes from a poor family, was brought to the attention of the house.

Under Matter of Urgent Public Importance, the lawmaker told the house that because the victim was from a poor home she thought she would not get justice and thus decided not to report the case.

Reacting to the reports, the house immediately set up a five-man ad-hoc committee to liaise with the victim and ensure justice.

Members of the committee include Oduntan, Olowo, Tejuosho, Raheem Kazeem Adewale and Lola Akande, the chairman.

Rotimi Olowo, who represents Shomolu Constituency 1 at the House, confirmed that the crime rate in his constituency had soared in recent times.

He pleaded with his colleagues to pressure the State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, to detail officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) to the area, which he said had become a danger zone.
