Lagos teachers assured of big pay hikes

Lagos - Lagos State Government has agreed to implement the 27.5 per cent Teachers Salary Structure, according to Mr Momodu Braimah, the secretary, Nigeria Union of Teachers.

Braimah told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview on Sunday that there was hope for teachers in Lagos."Lagos State Government has assured teachers that the new salary structure will be implemented in our January payment,’’ Braimah told NAN.

According to him, the head of service, in a text message to the union, assured him that there was hope for teachers in Lagos State.Braimah said that there would be no need for the teachers to go on their threatened, strike since the government has given commitment to comply with the agreement.

NAN reports that the NUT nationwide gave all states until 31 January to pay the 27.5 per cent salary increase. 18 out of the 36 states were yet to implement the salary structure.

On 24 September 2012, teachers in Lagos went on a one-day strike over the non-implementation of the agreement.The strike was suspended following acceptance by Gov Babatunde Fashola to meet the teachers' demand this January.

The 27.5 per cent increase in teachers’ salary was approved in 2008 and implemented by 17 states.
