Abuja - The Lagos State Government is planning an aggressive campaign to enforce guidelines for commercial boat operators in a bid to forestall the tide of boat mishaps in the state.
Managing Director of Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Abisola Kamson, said the new drive was in line with the commitment of the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode's administration to ensure safety in the mode of transport.
The state government has also distributed 2 400 life jackets, donated by an energy firm, to primary and secondary students and boat operators in Sabokoji community in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area.
Kamson said the jackets were particularly designed for students who would be get to school via ferry.
She advised parents to insist that their wards use the life jackets when on board.
"The life jackets should not just be left at home."
Recently, a boat mishap occurred along Oke Ira Nla, Ajah-Bayeku, Ikorodu axis of the state killing five passengers.
Seventeen were rescued.
