MDGs office avails funds for provision of water

24 March 2015, 07:53Okoro Chinedu

Lagos - The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) office in the Presidency said the availing of funds to the Water Resources Ministry highlighted its commitment to helping the country attain its goal of providing citizens clean water.

In an event held in Abuja to commemorate World Water Day on Monday, the office disclosed it had appropriated about N700 million in 2015 to support the development of the water sector.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on MDGs, Dr Precious Gbeneol, promised continuous cooperation with the Ministry of Water Resources in enhancing the provision of the precious liquid.

“My office will not relent in its efforts at ensuring that water related MDGs projects and programmes are continued to be given the desired attention in order to meet the MDGs goals,” she stated.

Meanwhile, Nigeria on Monday celebrated World Water Day under the theme, “Water and Sustainable Development.”

In Nigeria, where the population is estimated at 173,6 million, 63,2 million people do not have access to safe water. More than 112 million do not have access to adequate sanitation.
