MEND warns Benin President to stay off Nigeria

02 December 2013, 14:40Tony Smart

Lagos - Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has warned the President of Benin Republic, Thomas Yayi Boni and other notable Benin government officials which include the Ambasador of Benin to Nigeria, the Chief of Police Benin Republic not to come into Nigeria.

The warning is coming on the heels of the arrest and eventual release of the leader of former President of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) and leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF) Mujahid Dokubo-Asari in Benin Republic.

The ex-militant was arrested over an allegation from Nigeria that he is a leader of Boko Haram.

The group also threatened to destabilise the Niger-Delta region if their former leader, Henry Okah, who is currently serving jail time in South Africa is not released immediately. It called on the governments of South Africa and Nigeria to work out modalities on releasing the MEND leader.
