Man charged for assaulting couple

17 January 2013, 07:34

Lagos - A man, believed to be a miscreant, was on Wednesday charged before an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly attacking a couple with a pestle.

The accused, Kareem Agbolanle, 23, is standing trial on a two-count charge of assault and causing bodily harm.

Agbolanle, whose address is unknown, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Insp. Soji Ojaopomo, said the accused attacked Mr and Mrs Kamali Shitu with pestle and injured them.

He said the offences were committed on Dec. 23, 2012 at 12.25 p.m. on Gaskiya road in Ijora-Badia, Apapa.

"The accused, a miscreant, attacked the couple with a pestle without any provocation and injured them.

"They were rushed to the hospital for the injuries they received on their foreheads, faces and hands," Ojaopomo told the court.

He said the offences contravened Sections 171 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

The Chief Magistrate, Oluyemisi Adelaja, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50 000 with one surety in like sum.

She said the surety must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government as part of the bail conditions.

The case was adjourned to February 11 for further hearing.
