Lagos - A lover, Sunday Ajero, who allegedly
assaulted a woman for repudiating a marriage offer, was on Wednesday
charged before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Ajero, 34, who resides at No. 20, Cole St., Ojuelegba, is facing a
four-count charge bordering on assault, entering a residence with intent
to commit felony and willful damage to property.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Gbenga Salami, told the court that the accused
committed the offences on Sept. 5 at Plot 30, Babs Animashaun Road,
He said Ajero had cohabited with Uche Obiorah, 40, at her residence at Babs Animashaun Road, Surulere, for six years.
Salami said Obiorah, who had been separated from her husband, was beaten by the embittered lover.
"The woman’s desire to return to her husband angered the man, who attacked her with a chair and injure her,"
Salami said the accused also assaulted one Benard Ugochukwu, the woman’s neighbour, by slapping him.
According to the prosecutor, the accused damaged valuables worth
N323 000 including a video camera, a set of dining table, a wall mirror
and two bedside lamps, property of Obiorah.
The offences, he noted, contravened Sections 170, 171, 306 and 348 of the Criminal Law Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused, if found guilty, may be sentenced to five years imprisonment.
The accused, however, denied the charges.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, F.B. Lawal, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She said one of the sureties should be a relation of the accused and should be above 40 years with gainful employment.
The case was adjourned to Oct. 28 for mention.
