Man remanded for attempted kidnapping

11 May 2013, 07:17

Ondo State - An Okitipupa Magistrates' Court on Friday remanded one Samson Egbe, 21, over an alleged conspiracy, attempt to kidnapping, unlawful possession of a car and an automatic rifle.

The Prosecutor, Cpl. Ayodeji Omoyeigha, told the court that the accused and others now at large committed the offences on 5 April 5 at Apata Street, Okitipupa in the Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.

"The accused and others now at large, conspired and attempted to kidnap one Olubunmi Akinbuwa while she was returning from her office.

"They were also in unlawful possession of one Toyota Carina saloon car with registration No. AG 88 ABD and one Mosberg Magnum automatic rifle No. 265 with two live cartridges which they could not satisfactorily account for how they came about it,’’ he said.

Omoyeigha said that the rifle found in the possession of the accused was a prohibited firearm and was without licence granted by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Although the plea of the accused was not taken, his Counsel, Mr Omotayo Ogungbemi, applied for bail in liberal terms and promised credible sureties if granted.

The Magistrate, Mrs Justina Kpemi, ordered the prosecution to duplicate the case file and send a copy to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice, saying that some of the counts of the charge were not within the jurisdiction of the court.

"The prosecutor should report back to this court on April 28 while the accused person is to be remanded in prison custody till then,’’ she said.
