Military busts Abuja India hemp syndicate

09 January 2015, 06:52Augustine Osayande

Abuja - Soldiers from the Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army have arrested four men and recovered a fuel tanker loaded with Indian hemp at the Giri checkpoint in Abuja.

Major Charles Ekeocha, Public Relations Officer of the Guards Brigade, disclosed the arrest.

Ekeocha said four suspects were arrested with the 33-litre tanker loaded with 48 bags of Indian hemp.

He said that the tanker with registration MKA 887 Z F was meant for carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

“Preliminary investigation on the matter revealed that the tanker had been used in carrying Indian hemp instead of PMS,” said Ekeocha.

He said the arrest was part efforts by the brigade to rid the FCT and its environs of crime. According to him, the arrest came at a time the nation is preparing for elections.

“It is our belief that these weeds are meant for distribution to our youths during this election period in order to cause havoc to law abiding citizens. We on our part are doing our utmost best to ensure that such people and their commodity do not reach their desired target,” he said.

Ekeocha said the tanker and the suspects would be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation.
