15 October 2015, 10:06

Mararaba - The Police on Wednesday arraigned a 36-year-old motorcyclist, Amade Chimeze, in a Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court for assaulting a police officer.

The accused, who resides behind Zinaria Primary School, Mararaba, is facing a two-count charge of assault and causing grievous hurt.

According to the Prosecutor, Friday Adaji, one Asang Francis attached to the ‘B’ Division Mararaba, Nasarawa State, reported the matter on October 11.

Adaji told the court that on the same date at about 09.15 a.m, while Cpl. Francis was walking along ECWA U-turn Mararaba, the accused, who was riding recklessly on his motorcycle, knocked him down.

He added that after the accused hit the policeman with his motorcycle, he removed a screw driver and inflicted several injuries on Francis’ hand and head.

Adaji said that the offences contravened Sections 265 and 241 of the Penal Code.

The accused could bag a three-year sentence, if convicted.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Presiding Judge, Albert Maga, granted him bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum and ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

Maga added that the surety must be a civil servant on at least Grade Level 7 whose address must be verified by the court.

Further hearing has been fixed for October 29.
