08 August 2012, 07:26

Jalingo - The National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Tuesday expressed shock at the amount of fake drugs in Taraba.

Mrs Leli Aigbomian, an assistant director in the agency, who led an anti-counterfeiting team to the state, said at a news conference after an operation in Jalingo, that the discovery was done using the newly introduced device called Truscan.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Truscan is a new device used to test the quality of drugs.

NAN also reports that thousands of naira worth of fake, unregistered and banned drugs were seized from the pharmaceutical shops inspected.

They include Analgin injection, Fulcin tablets, Gentamycin 280mg, and Pectol.

Aigbomian, who represented the Director General of NAFDAC, Dr Paul Orhii, noted that 40 establishments were inspected by the six teams that toured the state.

She said the teams tested 167 varieties of drugs.

The Assistant Director added that the owners of the affected stores had been invited to present receipts for all the drugs to enable the agency trace the manufacturers.

She said that those found to be directly involved would be prosecuted.
