Abuja - Rep. Lawali Anka (ANPP-Mafara/Anka) has said that the National Assembly will not disappoint Nigerians in the on-going process to review the 1999 Constitution.
Anka’s assurance came barely 48-hours to the second stage of public hearing on the constitution review slated to hold in each of the six political zones of the country on Thursday.
The lawmaker told newsmen in Anka on Tuesday, that unlike previous attempts to amend the constitution, the on-going process was all encompassing and would ``stand the test of time''.
According to him, the final document will reflect the true opinion of all Nigerians.
``We are representatives of the people, as such, we must respect the wishes of our people in all the clauses that were proposed for amendment in the constitution no matter whose interest is in jeopardy,`` he added.
He further said that the National Assembly would reject any attempt by governors to influence the amendment in their favour, assuring that it would be in tandem with the views of the majority of Nigerians.
Anka said that clauses proposed for amendment, such as the autonomy of local councils and the immunity of executives, would pass through the amendment once people voted in their favour.
``Those clauses will pass even as some governors might not like that.
``I can tell you that we are not under the influence of any governor and we have not received any money from the governors as insinuated by some pessimists,`` he said.
He also said that the transparent manner with which Saturday’s public sessions were conducted across the country was sufficient to convince Nigerians of the sincerity of the National Assembly.
Anka enjoined Nigerians to utilise the opportunity offered by the public sessions to make positive contributions that would make the constitution an acceptable national document.
According to him, such contributions will also make the country a better place for all.
