05 July 2012, 15:13

Gombe - The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested 38 drug suspects in Gombe between April and June this year.

The suspects were arrested with 48 kilogrammes of cannabis and 61.41 kilogrammes of psychotropic substances during the period.

Mr Aliyu Adole, NDLEA Commander in the state told the news Agency of Nigeria in Gombe on Thursday that the agency had also secured the conviction of 20 other suspects.

``We were able to arrest 38 male suspects with some cannabis and psychotropic substances, bringing the total of 99.89 kilogrammes seized in three months.

``That is to tell you the level of the problems of drugs consumption in Gombe State'', he said.

According to him, the second quarter has been very eventful with about 20 suspects awaiting trial.

Adole said that one of the ways to assist the suspects to reduce involvement in drug deal was employment.

``Let the government try to employ, the private sector should come up to assist the government in order to employ these youths.

``If you find out from these people that we arrested so far, they will tell you that they were not employed, they are looking for money to eat and that they have to sell drugs,'' he said.
