NDLEA arrests 705 drug suspects in Kano

07 February 2013, 12:07 -

Kano - The Kano State Command of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested 705 suspects in Kano in 2012 for dealing in illicit drugs.

The state Commander of the agency, Ahmadu Garba, made this known in Kano on Wednesday in an address he delivered at a one-day sensitisation seminar for selected government agencies in the state.

Garba said that out of the 705 suspects 466 were counseled and rehabilitated.

The commander said that the agency seized over 4,000 kilos of illicit drugs within the period.

He said the seminar was organised for officials of Kwankwasiyya Vanguard, Kano Road Traffic Agency and Vigilance Group to acquaint them with basic drug demand and supply reduction strategies.

He described those invited for the seminar as `important arm of drug abuse control who were closer to the people.

He expressed optimism that the participants would assist the agency in providing grassroots solution to the problem of abuse of illicit drug and trafficking.

In his address, Gov. Rabiu Kwankwaso, represented by Abubakar Usman, the Director- General, Security and Special Services, expressed the commitment of the government to eradicate drug abuse in the state.

He said that the government had established various skill acquisition programmes as well as awarded scholarship as part of measures to empower the youths in the state.
