NDLEA arrests patent medicine dealer

12 April 2013, 07:30

Lagos - The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Thursday arrested a patent medicine dealer for allegedly attempting to smuggle 40,3 kg of methamphetamine to South Africa.

Mitchell Ofoyeju, the spokesman of the agency, said this in a statement in Lagos.

Ofoyeju said the suspects attempted to smuggle the drugs on board of a South African Airline flight, when it was detected by its officials at the cargo section, Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos.

"A total of 41 parcels of the methamphetamine were found hidden inside grind melon packed with cosmetics and provisions.

"Other items, such as biscuits, milk, body cream and food ingredients, were also in the package to divert attention.

"We have impounded a Hummer Jeep, Range Rover Jeep and a bus from suspected members of the cartel," Ofoyeju said.

The spokesman said the suspect's childhood friend, who lived in South Africa, allegedly sent to him N450 000 to buy the goods for him.

He said the case was under investigation.
