NDLEA intercepts 15.8kg of cocaine worth N126m

Lagos - Ahmadu Giade, Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has expressed concern over the plight of some Nigerians on death row over drug related offences in Indonesia.

Giade said this in a statement made available on Thursday in Lagos.

He said that in spite of the deplorable condition of their condition, the Federal Government was putting in continued effort to intervene through presidential clemency.

The chairman said that the agency was still recording arrests of suspected drug traffickers in spite of the death penalty in some countries.

"It is sad that at a time when the fate of some citizens was uncertain following their involvement in drug trafficking, yet we recorded new arrest.

"Apart from the young man that imported 15.850kg of cocaine from Brazil, we recently apprehended six passengers going to Hong Kong in the same flight at the Abuja Airport.

"The NDLEA will continue to work with the government toward ensuring that our citizens on death row in foreign countries get succour through presidential clemency," Giade said.

He also spoke on the recent arrest of a 27-year-old man, Ilo Chidera Alex, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja, with 15.850kg of cocaine hidden inside make-up brushes.

He said the peddler was apprehended following the interception of the drugs inside his luggage at the Abuja Airport while returning from Brazil.

He said the estimated value of the drug was N126 million.

According to the statement, the NDLEA recently has prevented six drug suspects from going to Hong Kong where drug trafficking is punishable by death.

They were found with 7.145kg of cocaine which they ingested in a bid to evade arrest.
