Kano - The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano State has seized 1,400 kg of illicit drugs since January, the state Commander, Alhaji Garba Ahmadu, said on Wednesday.
Ahmadu made the fact known when he addressed newsmen as part of activities to commemorate World Drugs Day in Kano.
He said the seizures comprised 1,200kg of cannabis sativa or Indian hemp, cocaine, 200gm, heroine, 27gm, and 215kg of psychotropic substances.
The commander said the command also arrested 278 suspects for drug-related offences during the period, out of whom, 143 were prosecuted at the Federal High Court, Kano.
He said 178 people received counselling at the command’s rehabilitation centre, while 15 others were rehabilitated and integrated with their families.
The commander said inadequate funding, manpower and equipment were some of the challenges facing the command.
He, however, commended the state government for donating a vehicle to the command and e restated the commitment of the command to the fight against drug abuse and trafficking.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the command within the week organised quiz and football competitions among some secondary schools in the state.
