NGO deworms 500 orphans, vulnerable children

24 January 2013, 15:01

Taraba - A non-governmental organisation, Maigodia Centre for Youth Development (MCYD), says it has administered anti-worms drugs to 500 orphans and vulnerable children in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba.

The Chief Executive Officer of the organisation, Mrs Eglah Ibrahim, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jalingo on Wednesday.

Ibrahim said that children of five years and below would be given the drugs to protect them against stomach pains and other ailments caused by worms.

"We have so far administered Albendazole drugs to 500 children in Gassol and we intend to do the same to the remaining 600 children in our care as soon as possible.

"Our objective is to prevent these children from various diseases that are caused by worms so that they can remain in good health," Ibrahim said.

She said that the organisation had also acquired birth certificates for 400, distributed learning materials to 40 and established kids club in Jalingo.

According to him, the idea is to make the kids to become interested in club activities and develop sense of trust.

"Indoor games facilities are provided in the club and the 22 sessions of the club’s activities will not be run during school hours.

"Consequently, they can understand their rights and protect themselves against sexual abuses and other forms of social vices," she said.
