Minna - Gov. Babangida Aliyu of Niger on Friday approved the release of N37 million for the payment of registration fees for 593 pre-degree students at the Federal University of Technology, Minna.The state Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr Mustapha Lemu, made this known to newsmen in Minna.Lemu confirmed that his ministry had already released N18 million as part payment in line with the agreement reached between the university management and the state government on the matter.He said the institution was expected to furnish the state government with the relevant data on students of Niger state origin who had secured the admission for pre-degree programme and actually registered before the balance would be paid.Lemu said the arrangement for the part payment was in line with the state government commitment to accountability and transparency in all its dealings.He said that by so doing, the people of the state would get value for their money.Lemu explained that policy was to ensure that the state filled its admission quota for regular degree programmes at the university and develop human capital.He commended the university’s new Vice Chancellor, Prof. Masibau Akanbi, for his approach to reviving the cordial relationship between the state government and the institution that recently reached its lowest ebb.The commissioner als disclosed that the state government and the university management were working to revive the MoU toward reducing its scope to make agreement more manageable for implementation.Lemu advised the Vice Chancellor to improve the university relationship with host communities by participating in their activities to enable them take ownership of the university and protect its interest at all times. - NAN
