NSCDC arrests 2 employees of Peace Corps

27 February 2013, 16:04

Abuja - The FCT Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested two employees of the Peace Corps of Nigeria for alleged illegal operations.

It will be recalled that the Commandant-General of the Civil Defence Corps, Dr Ade Abolurin, had ordered the arrest of security guards working for companies without operating licences.

Abolurin later told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the Peace Corps was not registered nor recognised by law to render security services.

``Peace corps is not a legal private guard company; it is not recognised by the Federal Ministry of Interior and it is not a paramilitary organisation,'' he said.

He said that security guard companies that wished to operate in the country should endeavour to upgrade and meet the necessary requirements for them to operate.

The NSCDC Public Relations Officer, FCT Command, Mr David Akinbinu, also told NAN that the two men, who were arrested would be prosecuted.

Akinbinu said that the command also sealed up 15 private guard companies for operating illegally in the FCT.

He said that seven of the companies that complied with the NSCDC guidelines had been reopened, while five were still in the process of meeting the guidelines.

Akinbinu said that five other sealed companies had not made any efforts to make amends and had remained sealed.

He warned members of the public to avoid engaging the services of such companies to guard their homes and business premises.
