NSCDC arrests man for impersonation

30 May 2013, 07:30

Ibadan - The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Oyo State command, arrested a 39 year-old man, Wasiu Azeez, on Wednesday for alleged impersonation.

The commandant, Shem Obafaiye, told newsmen in Ibadan that the suspect had been presenting himself as an officer of the corps.

He said the suspect was caught after an intelligence tip-off from the headquarters of the corps in Abuja detailed his whereabouts.

Obafaiye said investigations revealed that his dubious activities started about three years ago when he started extorting money from applicants seeking employment in corps.

"The suspect was apprehended for forgery of NSCDC recruitment forms and impersonating  NSCDC official with a fake uniform decorated as a Level-12 officer.

"A level 12 officer is a chief superintendent in the corps. He has been duping unsuspecting members of the public on the pretext of effecting their enlistment into the service and collecting money from them," Obafaiye said.

The commandant said that the corps had recovered fake NSCDC letter-head from the suspect’s residence and that two cars were confiscated.

He said the suspect had been on the wanted list of the corps after he managed to escape arrest in several states.

Obafaiye said that the suspect would be transferred to the corps’ headquarters in Abuja for further investigations from where he would be charged in court.

He advised members of the public to be wary of people who claimed to be officers of the corps, adding that recruitment into the corps "is open to all Nigerians at no cost’’.

The suspect told newsmen said he lured into the act after he was duped by a lady in Abuja.

He said that the lady, who claimed to be a NSCDC officer, gave him a fake employment letter some years back.
