NSCDC seals 4 private security firms

30 January 2013, 13:08

Abuja  - The FCT Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Tuesday sealed off four offices of private security companies allegedly operating illegally in the FCT.

Mr Abdullahi Kofaroro, the FCT Commandant of the Corps, disclosed this to newsmen shortly after sealing off the premises.

Kofaroro said the erring firms included Jide Taiwo and Co, SIGWA Laundry and Dry cleaning Services, Global Race Security Services and Syndicate Security Guard Company.

He said they were closed for allegedly operating within the territory without meeting the necessary requirements.

He said the companies also failed to honour several invitations from the corps.

Kofaroro was represented during operation by the Command’s Officer-in-Charge of private guard companies, Mrs Florence Akalawu.

``We closed them down because they are operating an illegal security outfit, and we sent several letters warning them to update their documents and obtain a licence to operate as a security outfit but many of them refused.

``Some of them are estate managers and yet they engage in security outfit. Since 2009, we have been relating with them.

``The procedure is either you register with the security company; obtain a licence, even though you want to use it for your own estate you have to obtain a licence or you engage a licenced private company.

``So what we expect them to do now is to engage a licenced private security outfit, and then if they want to go into the business of Security Company properly, they should follow the procedures and obtain a licence.

``The procedure is that they have to go to CAC, register their security outfit then come to Civil Defence and register with us, if they meet the necessary requirement, we (they) give them the licence.’’

The commandant said that for a company to be granted the licence to operate a private security outfit, it must be registered with the Cooperate Affairs Commission.

He said the company must also have a minimum capital share of N10 million while all the directors of the company must be Nigerians.

Kofaroro said the companies were expected to pay N500,000 as registration fees, adding that investigations would be conducted by the State Security Service (SSS) before their applications could be considered and approval given by the Minister of Interior.

He said the defaulting companies would remain sealed until they met the necessary requirements.

The commandant advised business places and individuals patronising such un-licensed companies to cease from doing so.

He advised companies to always engage trained and registered security guards.

The Director of Global Race Security Services, Mr Debo Alasan, told journalists that the NSCDC had given him until March to meet the requirements but was surprised to have his company sealed.

Alasan, who said he had commenced the process of registering his company, decried the high cost being charged by the Corps to register a security outfit.

`` All what they are saying is closed to N3 million and I said they should give me up to the first quarter of this year and they agreed, and I left their office but to my greatest surprise I just saw them this morning.

``I was on my way, one of my staff called me that the civil defence are already in my office, they said they want to seal off the place.’’

Alasan pleaded with the command to give the erring firms more time to enable them comply with the requirements set for their operations.
