NUJ to secure bail of detained Kano journalists

14 February 2013, 13:02

Kano - The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) said on Wednesday that it would secure bail of the detained journalists in Kano from the court.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two detained newsmen would appear at the Kano Magistrates' Court on Thursday for alleged inciting reports against polio immunisation campaign.

Mr Mohammed Garba, the President of the union, made this known to NAN in Kano in a telephone interview from Port Harcourt, Rivers.

Garba said that the union was consulting with relevant authorities to secure the release of the affected members.

NAN recalls that two out of the three journalists arrested by the police from Wazobia FM Kano, appeared before a Magistrates'  Court at Gyadi-Gyadi in Kano metropolis.

The court granted bail to one of the three journalists and deferred the bail application of two others with an order against infringing on their rights before Feb. 14 to determine their bail.

Garba told NAN that ``’the NUJ is impressed with the court directives that the detained journalists should have access to their family, lawyers as well as food,’’ saying that this was a good development.

The president said that the journalists would be given all the support needed toward ensuring that their case was not unduly prolonged, stressing that ``justice delayed is justice denied.’’

Garba also commended the cooperation of the state Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Idris, on the way the command was handling the unfortunate event.

He assured Nigerians that the union would continue to encourage its members to uphold the ethics of the profession at all times.
