NURTW in Kafanchan to regulate transport fares

11 December 2012, 15:04

Kafanchan - The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Kafanchan, said it would regulate activities of its members to guard against hike in cost of transportation during Christmas.

The union's Unit Chairman, Ibrahim Iro, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Kafanchan.

Iro, said although increment in the cost of petrol had affected cost of transport in other parts of the country, the Union in Kafanchan would ensure that such fares remained affordable.

``Our drivers still charge the same fares as there has not been any hike in our parks and we hope to maintain the situation.

``We are also aware of some commercial drivers who may take advantage of the Christmas rush, but the union is a strong regulatory body  and as such members cannot act otherwise.’’

The Chairman urged government to regulate the activities of independent marketers of petroleum products to ensure sanity in the system.

``Most service stations sell a litre of petrol  at between N135 and N150 against government’s approved pump price of N97.00.’’

Iro, said the Union had over 200 members with over 300 registered vehicles in Kafanchan zone.

Meanwhile, commercial drivers in Kafanchan said cost of transport would likely increase if the pump price of petrol continued   to rise.

Some of the drivers who spoke to NAN lamented the cost of petrol, saying that the situation was affecting their businesses.

Mallam Idi Mohammed, a commercial driver at Kafanchan motor park, said it cost him N6,500 to fill his vehicle's tank as against N4,200 before now.

Mohammed said although the cost of transport remained stable, he believed the situation might change

Another driver, Mr Adamu Sunday, urged the NURTW to collaborate with  relevant organisations such as the National Labour Congress (NLC), to address the situation before it escalates.
